Characteristics

– Number of Beads: Mala traditionally consists of 108 beads, a sacred number in many spiritual traditions. This number holds significance in various Eastern cultures and has multiple interpretations, including its connection to natural cycles and Lord Shiva. Sometimes, malas may have fewer beads, such as 11 or 27, and these smaller malas may be used as bracelets or necklaces depending on size and purpose. A larger bead called the Meru or Guru bead is usually placed at the end of the mala. This bead or marker, which can take various forms, symbolizes the beginning and end of the mantra cycle and differs in shape from the other beads.

– Material of Beads: The beads can be made from various materials, including sandalwood, rudraksha, tulsi, gemstones, or even flowers and plants.

Uses

– Meditation: Malas are primarily used for meditation. Each bead helps count and repeat mantras or prayers. In meditation, all the beads, except the Meru, are used. When reaching the Meru, one turns the mala around and begins the next cycle.

– Decorative: Malas are also used in art and jewelry making. In jewelry, they are recognized as long and beautiful necklaces, often crafted from decorative and valuable beads. These necklaces may be made from materials such as pearls, gemstones, or semi-precious stones. Some people also use rudraksha and tulsi beads for decoration. It is recommended not to use the mala used for meditation as a decorative necklace and to separate them based on their intended use.
