Translator’s Introduction
Since my teenage years, I have always been concerned with teaching and learning methods. I strongly felt the need for active and creative learning, but unfortunately, I did not find it in school. However, outside of school, I always filled my time with educational programs that interested me. The dynamism and learning I sought existed beyond the formal education system.
I pursued my undergraduate studies in Educational Sciences at Allameh Tabataba’i University, hoping to fulfill my educational aspirations. However, the university did not fully address my concerns either. I was looking for education that was accompanied by joy and love rather than anxiety and fear—an education that was a continuous process throughout life, not confined to the classroom. I wanted to read texts that would enrich my life with their meaning rather than just memorizing content for exams that had no real-life application.
I began teaching children in 2010. At that time, I worked as a swimming and astronomy instructor and always strived to provide a friendly and playful learning environment, ensuring children had the opportunity to express their needs and enjoy their education.
Teaching Yoga to Children
In 2015, fate led me to the “Satyananda Ashram” in Bihar, India. I initially thought that leaving behind my busy urban life and pausing my work with children would take me away from my goals for a while. However, I soon realized that not only was I not drifting away from my purpose, but I had actually found exactly what I had been searching for throughout my life.
Yoga contributes to both physical and mental well-being. Yoga asanas, in addition to increasing bodily flexibility, facilitate energy flow in the body and help open the mind. Moreover, “Yama” and “Niyama” are the principles that guide us on how to live our lives while preserving our energy. Every moment I spent in Bihar was filled with learning, and as I had always desired, this education was not confined to a classroom—it was a continuous, immersive experience. Bihar and later Rikhiapeeth provided me with invaluable experiences and yogic teachings.
During my time in Bihar, I became familiar with the second volume of Yoga Education for Children, and later in Rikhiapeeth, I had the opportunity to meet Swami Yoga Bhakti, one of the most experienced children’s yoga instructors. The guidance I received from her and Swami Shakti Murti was immensely helpful in my journey.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to those who supported me on this path. I sincerely appreciate my dear mentor, Ms. Haleh Nikafshan, whose guidance and support made my journey to Bihar possible. I am also deeply thankful to my esteemed teacher, Mr. Borzou Ghadiri, whose patient support, assistance, and guidance made the translation and publication of this book a reality. Additionally, I am grateful to Ms. Maryam Gouyandeh for encouraging and directing me towards translating yoga-related texts over the years. I also owe immense gratitude to my family for their unconditional support, which has allowed me to pursue my goals freely throughout all these years.
Lastly, I would like to thank all my students who have filled my heart with joy and happiness. Some of their drawings and illustrations are included in the appendix at the end of the book.
The book you are holding is currently the latest children’s yoga book published by Bihar Publications. It was first printed in 2008 and subsequently reprinted in 2009 and 2012. Various authors have contributed to its writing, and their names are mentioned at the beginning of each chapter. Additionally, in the appendix, I have compiled some of my personal experiences and findings related to teaching yoga to children.
I hope this book serves as a useful introduction for those interested in children’s yoga education.
